A Call to Join in Faith

For those who feel a pulled toward fasting, I extend an invitation to embark on this sacred journey. Fasting, which goes beyond mere abstinence; it is a profound act of drawing closer to God, releasing burdens, and stepping boldly into His promises. I encourage you to rend your heart, break chains, and proclaim victory in every facet of your life. It is a collective call to stride confidently into the fullness of God’s abundance.

This fast may be seen as a spiritual battle, but there is an unwavering stance you must take on God’s Word, trusting that His promises will come to fruition. You must envision a life of abundance for your family—marked by health, joy, and peace. Holding fast to the belief that you will receive all the resources needed to bless others abundantly.

The Purpose of the Fast

A fast is not just about personal transformation but about aligning with God's heart and His purposes. Here's the why behind the fast:

  1. Obedience in Secret

As Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:16-18, fasting is a private act of devotion. It’s not about public recognition but about intimacy with the Father. When we fast in secret, God promises to reward us openly.

  1. Breaking Chains and Healing

God’s chosen fast, described in Isaiah 58:6-11, is transformative. It loosens the chains of injustice, sets the oppressed free, and brings healing to our bodies and spirits. It’s a call to be the hands and feet of Jesus—feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and clothing the naked.

A Heart Posture of Expectation

Each day of your fast is an opportunity to invite God into the sacred and mundane. The rhythm of prayer and scripture will open your heart to His whispers. Here’s what you can expect when you fast God’s way:

  • Breakthroughs: “Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear.” (Isaiah 58:8)

  • Answered Prayers: “You will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and He will say: Here am I.” (Isaiah 58:9)

  • Guidance and Strength: “The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land.” (Isaiah 58:11)

Practical Tips for the Journey

  • Prepare Your Heart and Mind: Start each day with intentionality. Remind yourself of the purpose of your fast and ask God to sustain you.

  • Stay Hydrated: While you abstain from food, ensure your body is well-nourished with water.

  • Stay Present: Without the distractions of TV and social media, lean into the quiet. Listen for God’s voice in the silence.

  • Reflect and Journal: Capture the insights, prayers, and revelations that come during this time.

The Fast at a Glance:

Answer the following questions not through your flesh or emotions, but by seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit within you. This will ensure that your fast aligns with God's will and purpose for your life.

What is the duration of the fast (length and time)?

Unless the Holy Spirit leads me otherwise, I often do sun up to sun down most recently I was called to a 7 Day fast. (6 AM - 6 PM).

What will you choose to abstain from?

Seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance on what you should give up during your fast. In my most recent fast, I felt led to abstain from the following:

  • Food

  • TV

  • Social Media

What to Embrace during this fast?

Is the Lord calling you to focus on specific scriptures? Is He prompting you to spend more time in prayer to remain in His presence?

For me, he was asking me to:

  • Pray: Three intentional times throughout the day.

  • Scripture Reading:  Read the following books.  One each day.

    • Day 1: Esther

    • Day 2: Matthew

    • Day 3: Isaiah

    • Day 4: Job

    • Day 5: Ephesians

    • Day 6: Titus

    • Day 7: 1st & 2nd John

This below is a framework for fasting for specific things, and scripture support.  It is not a boundary.  You should remain open to the Spirit’s guidance to explore additional scriptures as led.

What Is the Purpose of This Fast?

Fasting is an act of surrender, a physical manifestation of a heart yearning for transformation. This fast is deeply personal and purpose-driven, intended to draw the individual closer to God and align their life with His will. Here is the purpose behind the fast:

1. Repentance: A Cleansed Heart and Renewed Spirit

The fast begins with repentance, a humble posture before the Lord, seeking a pure heart and a steadfast spirit. The goal is to strip away every layer of sin, self-righteousness, bitterness, and pride. This is not about seeing oneself as more righteous than others but recognizing the need for God’s grace.

Psalm 51:10 (NIV)Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

The individual seeks a breaking open of the soul, asking God to reveal hidden faults for true repentance. This involves not just outward sorrow but a deep, inward tearing of the heart—a full return to God.

Joel 2:12-13 (NIV)“Even now,” declares the Lord,“return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.”Rend your heart and not your garments.Return to the Lord your God,for he is gracious and compassionate slow to anger and abounding in love.

2. A Deeper Relationship with God

Central to this fast is a longing for intimacy with the Savior. The desire is to hear His voice clearly, recognize it without doubt, and follow His lead. It’s a time to quiet the world’s noise and attune the spirit to His presence.  Your fast should aim to deepen your love and dependence on Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd, so closely that no step is missed in following Him.

3. Breaking Generational Curses

The fast stands in the gap for the individual’s family, seeking to break the chains of generational curses such as poverty, sickness, fear, unrighteousness, strife, and brokenness. These curses will not be passed to the next generation.

Through the blood of Jesus, every curse is declared broken.

Exodus 12:13 (NIV)The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you.

Galatians 3:13-14 (NIV)Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us…He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles.

The individual declares the enemy’s grip on their family loosed, claiming redemption and the blessings of Abraham.

4. Breaking the Curse of Poverty

Poverty has no place in the lives of God’s children. The fast seeks financial breakthrough and divine provision. The family has faced financial struggles, including debt and housing instability. Through this fast, a reversal of lack and the release of God’s abundant blessings are declared.

Proverbs 18:21 (NIV)The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Words of life are spoken over finances, family, and the future, proclaiming that debts will be erased, and doors of opportunity will open wide.

5. Standing on God’s Promises

Fasting with confidence, the writer embraces the assurance that God’s plans are inherently good. They firmly believe in the promise of prosperity, hope, and a future brimming with His blessings.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Fasting for Ministry: A Guide to Fulfilling God’s Vision

If you feel called to ministry, fasting is a powerful way to seek God’s provision, guidance, and blessing. Here’s how you can approach this sacred journey:

1.  Embrace Your Calling

Recognize that God has called you to be a shepherd and servant leader, dedicated to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As you fast, seek His direction for the specific areas of your ministry, whether online, through social media, or in physical locations. Pray that He will prosper your efforts and open doors for growth and outreach.

2.        Pray for Growth and Alignment

As you fast, ask God to bring growth to your ministry and to strengthen your calling. Pray for wisdom, courage, and spiritual maturity, not only for yourself but also for your family or ministry team. Seek His guidance in equipping you and others to serve and build up the body of Christ.

Ephesians 4:11-13 (NIV)"So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."

3.        Fast for the Salvation of Others

Dedicate your fast to the salvation of those who do not yet know Christ. Pray that through your ministry, people will encounter God’s love and truth, be transformed, and glorify Him. Ask God to use your life and work as a testimony of His power and grace.

4.        Trust God’s ProvisionAs you fast, trust that God will provide the resources, opportunities, and guidance you need. Surrender your plans to Him, believing that He will fulfill His promises in His perfect timing.

5.        Fasting for a Greater Anointing

Fasting is a powerful way to seek a greater anointing for ministry, healing, and spiritual breakthrough. Here are steps to guide you through this journey:

A.       Claim the Promise of Greater Works

As you fast, stand on the promise Jesus made in John 14:12-14. Believe that through His name, you are empowered to do even greater works for God’s glory. This anointing enables you to fulfill your calling, bringing hope and transformation to those around you.

John 14:12-14 (NIV)"Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."

B.       Seek the Anointing of the Holy Spirit

Fasting is an opportunity to invite the Holy Spirit to work powerfully through you. Use Luke 4:18-19 as a declaration of your mission, asking for an anointing to bring good news, freedom, healing, and restoration to others.

Luke 4:18-19 (NIV)"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor."

C.      Break the Bondage of Sickness and Addiction

Dedicate your fast to breaking the chains of sickness and addiction—whether mental, physical, emotional, or spiritual—over yourself, your family, future generations and others. Stand firm on God’s promises of healing and restoration.

Psalms 103:2-5 (NIV)"Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s."

3 John 2 (NIV)"Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well."

Isaiah 53:5 (NIV)"But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed."

D.      Pray Boldly for Complete Healing

As you fast, pray for total healing and freedom—mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Trust that God’s power will renew and restore you and your loved ones, bringing peace and wholeness.

Final Encouragement

Hold tightly to the promises found in God’s Word. Through faith, prayer, and fasting, trust that you will witness His mighty works both in your life and through you. Remember, Jesus is always with you, giving you the strength and ability to accomplish all He has called you to do.
