Celebrating Blessed Mothers: The Calling, The Character, and The Commission

Today, we pause to celebrate Mother’s Day — a day set aside to honor and uplift the incredible women who understand the true weight and responsibility of motherhood. Being a mother is more than a biological act; it is a divine calling. And while we recognize all who carry the title of "mother," today I am especially called to speak to — and about — those who embrace the true calling of motherhood, in action as nurturers of others as God intended women to do.

What Is a Mother?

Many think of a mother simply as one who gives birth. But biblically and spiritually, a mother is so much more. A mother is a nurturer, a protector, an instructor, a guide, and a reflection of God’s unconditional love. She may be raising her own children or those birthed by others. She may serve in the home, the church, the community, or even the nation. Wherever she serves, a true mother blesses those around her.

Celebrating Blessed Mothers

We’re not just celebrating any kind of motherhood today — because the truth is, not all forms of motherhood are rooted in blessing. Some may neglect their calling or misunderstand it altogether. Today, we honor and celebrate blessed mothers — the ones who are a blessing to their children, their families, and their communities.

As Proverbs 31:28 says: "Her children arise and call her blessed."

According to Matthew Henry’s Commentary, these children are not only praising their mother, but they are living testimonies of her virtue. They bless God for the mother they had. It is part of the honor God commands us to give our parents — and it is a double honor when it’s a godly mother.

The Marks of a Blessed Mother

A mother who is a blessing is not perfect — but she is faithful. And there are powerful characteristics that define her:

1. She Teaches Wisdom

“She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.” – Proverbs 31:26

She imparts lessons learned — not just through her words, but through the life she lives. Her goal is not control but guidance. She teaches to prevent, not punish.

2. She Teaches Reverence for God

“Teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live... and to teach what is good.” – Titus 2:3

A blessed mother knows that children don’t just hear instruction — they watch example. She demonstrates reverence in her daily walk with God: through prayer, the Word, and spiritual discipline.

3. She Teaches Love by Loving

“Love is patient, love is kind... It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Her love is not earned — it is given. It is not dependent on behavior or perfection. She doesn’t tear her children down; she builds them up with patience and kindness. She loves them through their “mess” — just as God loves us through ours.

4. She Intercedes for Her Children

“Perhaps my children have sinned... This was Job’s regular custom.” – Job 1:4-6

Like Job, a mother who is a blessing stands in the gap. She prays for her children’s souls and walks in spiritual intercession — even when they don’t know it.

5. She Teaches Faith by Living It

“And without faith it is impossible to please God... he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
Hebrews 11:6

Faith isn’t just something she talks about — she walks in it. Her children learn what trust in God looks like because they see her living it out daily.

6. She Teaches Compassion and Forgiveness

“If you do not forgive others... your Father will not forgive your sins.” – Matthew 6:14-15

She does not hold grudges or model bitterness — even when wronged. Her example teaches her children that healing comes through grace and forgiveness.

7. She Teaches Perseverance

Hypomone — A Greek word meaning steadfast endurance.

She teaches her children to wait well — with expectation, not defeat. She models how to endure trials with hope because she knows God is faithful.

8. She Teaches Sacrifice

She sacrifices her:

  • Time

  • Health

  • Resources

  • Individuality

...all for the good of her family. Not because it’s easy. Not because she doesn’t feel the weight. But because she understands the responsibility that came when she chose to bring life into the world.

Some say, “I need time to work on myself.” And while self-care is valid, a mother who is a blessing understands that sacrifice is not optional — it is foundational. True motherhood requires laying yourself down, not abandoning your post.

The Sacred Role of a Mother

The word “mother” appears in the Bible approximately 320 times. That’s no accident. God intentionally weaves motherhood into His design for the home, the church, and the Kingdom.

A blessed mother understands agápē love — the kind of love that is selfless, sacrificial, and given without condition.

As Anders Nygren once said:

"Agape love is unmotivated in the sense that it is not contingent on any value or worth in the object of love."

In other words, we love:

  • Not because it’s deserved

  • Not because we’ll get something in return

  • Not because it’s easy

We love — because God loved us first.

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” – 1 Peter 4:8

When you understand that kind of love, you realize that being a mother means loving even when it hurts. Even when your children rebel. Even when the world says “let them go.” You love like God — because He never let you go.

Final Thoughts

Today, we honor blessed mothers — not perfect mothers, but faithful ones. Those who walk in wisdom, faith, love, and sacrifice. Those who raise their children not just to succeed in the world, but to know and love the Lord.

If you're that kind of mother — or if you're striving to be. If you are nurturing, that is you. The Godly aunt, God mother, spiritual mother, neighbor or friend we celebrate you. You are a blessing.

Happy Mother’s Day.
